The calendar export works on basis of the standardized iCalendar format. This format is compatible with all common calendar applications, but there are differences in handling. On iOS, a system dialog opens directly, which allows you to import this calendar. On all platforms (Android, Windows, MacOS & Linux) you get a *.ics file, which your browser downloads for you. This file contains the information for that particular event. All you have to do is click on the file and your operating system will recognize that it is an calendar file, open it in your default calendar application, which can be Thunderbird and Outlook among others, and there you can save the appointment. Unfortunately, Google Calendar's support is very poor, as it completely refuses *.ics import on mobile devices. The import is possible in the Google Calendar web interface, but it is hidden deep in the settings under Import & Export.
